The Duke Hotel & GBR London: Review

As part of Bond’s last #WhereToEatWednesday, we’ve saved the best till last. Arguably the most ‘it’ location in London’s most affluent area – Mayfair – the five-red-AA-star St. James’ Hotel Dukes London, is now the home to an all-day restaurant called the Great British Restaurant (GBR).

The Telegraph has described The Dukes hotel as ‘a favourite of both the Queen Mother and Diana, Princess of Wales’ with a prominence placed on tradition.

This royalty-charged establishment has only recently opened up its restaurant, run by head chef Nigel Mendham, who’s CV includes catering stints at the South Lodge Hotel in West Sussex and The Lygon Arms to name a few. The all-day restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner with the menu now evolved to include a seven-course tasting menu.

We cannot talk about The Duke Hotel and not mention its bar. Famous for being the watering hole of Ian Flemings’ James Bond, it is here that the characters uttered the famous ‘shaken not stirred’ request. Their cocktails come straight and strong from the freezer which probably helps them be the best martinis in the world. Best be sure to stop off before and after your meal, they’re that good! There’s no better way to complement them than by digging into the bar snacks on the new menu. You’ll now be able to order truffle chips, Norfolk crab on toast (probably a nod to Mendham’s East Anglian origins) and typically British Scotch eggs. The martinis don’t overshadow the rest of drinks menu, however, with thirty wines on offer split evenly between red and white and a succinct selection of English craft beers and ales.

After your meal and your second martini, be sure to make your way to The Cigar and Cognac Garden if you’re looking to puff away the evening, you can even purchase cigars from the hotel.
